    Timing of social feedback shapes observational learning in strategic interaction

    Abstract Many types of social interaction require the ability to anticipate others' behavior, which is commonly referred to as strategic sophistication. In this context, observational learning can represent a decisive tool for behavioral adaptation. However, little is known on whether and when individuals learn from observation in interactive settings. In the current study, 321 participants played one-shot interactive games and, at a given time along the experiment, they could observe the choices of an overtly efficient player. This social feedback could be provided before or after the participant’s choice in each game. Results reveal that players with a sufficient level of strategic skills increased their level of sophistication only when the social feedback was provided after their choices, whereas they relied on blind imitation when they received feedback before their decision. Conversely, less sophisticated players did not increase their level of sophistication, regardless of the type of social feedback. Our findings disclose the interplay between endogenous and exogenous factors modulating observational learning in strategic interaction

    Alteración termoxidativa en un aceite de girasol utilizado en 75 frituras de patatas

    The alteration of a sunflower oil used in 75 repeated deep fat frying of potatoes performed with addition of unused oil every 4-5 fryings with the aim to keep constant the proportion food/oil in 500 g / 3 liters, was evaluated by column and high performance size exclusion chromatographies. The polar components increased from 5.09 ± 0.21 (unused oil) to 19.11 ± 0,40 mg/100 mg oil mainly due to the formation of polymers and dimers of triacylglycerides, and to oxidized triacylglycerides. Oils, unused and from the 75 frying, were included at a rate of 15% on rat-diets. Dietary food intakes were similar, however body weight gain was a 22.3% lower in rat fed with the used oil-diet. Apparent digestibility ratios of fat and protein were similar in both groups of rats, however both. Alimentary and Protein Efficiency ratios decreased on the 75 frying oil fed rats.Se evalúa la alteración de un aceite de girasol utilizado en 75 frituras repetidas de patatas, efectuadas con adición de aceite sin usar cada 4-5 frituras con la finalidad de mantener constante la proporción alimento/aceite en 500 g / 3 litros, mediante cromatografías en columna y de alta eficacia por exclusión de tamaño de partícula. El contenido de los compuestos polares se incrementó de 5.09 ± 0.21 (aceite sin usar) a 19.11 ± 0.40 mg/100 mg de aceite, predominando los polímeros y dímeros de triacilglicéridos y los triacilglicéridos oxidados. Dichos aceites, sin usar y utilizado en 75 frituras, se incluyeron en la proporción del 15% en las dietas del lote basal y del lote fritura 75, respectivamente. La ingesta de ambas dietas fue similar, pero la ganancia de peso resultó ser un 22,3% menor en el lote fritura 75. Los coeficientes de digestibilidad aparente de grasa y proteína fueron similares en ambos lotes, pero la utilización nutritiva en términos de coeficientes de Eficacia Alimentaria y Proteica fue menor en el lote fritura 75

    Brine recovery from hypersaline wastewaters from table olive processing by combination of biological treatment and membrane technologies

    [EN] The fermentation brines from table olive processing (FTOP) are hypersaline effluents (conductivities higher than 75 mS·cm-1) with high organic matter concentrations (COD around 10 g·L-1), which also include phenolic compounds (between 700 and 1500 mg TY·L-1). In this work, an integrated process for the FTOP reuse as brine in the table olive processing has been evaluated. This integrated process consisted of a biological treatment followed by a membrane system, which included ultrafiltration (UF) plus nanofiltration (NF). The biological treatment was carried out by 6 L laboratory sequencing batch reactor (SBR). UF and NF were performed in laboratory plants for flat membranes of 0.0125 and 0.0072 m2, respectively. Each stream generated during the FTOP treatment (SBR effluent, and UF and NF permeates) were evaluated. The SBR eliminated around 80% of COD and 71% of total phenols concentration.     Comparison of two strategies for the start-up of a biological reactor for the treatment of hypersaline effluents from a table olive packaging industry

    Biological treatment of hypersaline effluents with high organic matter concentrations is difficult to carry out and it can require a long start-up phase. This is the case of the treatment of fermentation brines from the table olive packaging (FTOP) industries. These effluents are characterized by conductivity values around 90 mS/cm, COD around 15,000 mg/L and total phenols concentration around 1000 mg/L. In this work, FTOP has been treated in two sequencing batch reactors (SBRs) operated in parallel. In each SBR a different start-up strategy has been carried out. In the SBR-2, biomass was previously acclimated to high salinity using simulated wastewater without phenolic compounds, meanwhile in the SBR-1, FTOP was added from the beginning of the start-up. Results indicated more operational problems in the SBR-2 consisting in a higher deflocculation that drove to high turbidity values in the effluent. Besides, at the end of the start-up, the SBR-1 reached higher COD removal efficiencies than SBR-2 (88% and 73%, respectively). In both reactors, an increase in gamma-Proteobacteria in the microbial population was observed for increasing conductivities.     Single Dose Novel Salmonella Vaccine Enhances Resistance against Visceralizing L. major and L. donovani Infection in Susceptible BALB/c Mice

    Visceral leishmaniasis is a major neglected tropical disease, with an estimated 500,000 new cases and more than 50,000 deaths attributable to this disease every year. Drug therapy is available but costly and resistance against several drug classes has evolved. Despite all efforts, no commercial, let alone affordable, vaccine is available to date. Thus, the development of cost effective, needle-independent vaccines is a high priority. Here, we have continued efforts to develop live vaccine carriers based on recombinant Salmonella. We used an in silico approach to select novel Leishmania parasite antigens from proteomic data sets, with selection criteria based on protein abundance, conservation across Leishmania species and low homology to host species. Five chosen antigens were differentially expressed on the surface or in the cytosol of Salmonella typhimurium SL3261. A two-step procedure was developed to select optimal Salmonella vaccine strains for each antigen, based on bacterial fitness and antigen expression levels. We show that vaccine strains of Salmonella expressing the novel Leishmania antigens LinJ08.1190 and LinJ23.0410 significantly reduced visceralisation of L. major and enhanced systemic resistance against L. donovani in susceptible BALB/c mice. The results show that Salmonella are valid vaccine carriers for inducing resistance against visceral leishmaniasis but that their use may not be suitable for all antigens

    In Vitro and In Vivo Activity of a Palladacycle Complex on Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis

    Leishmaniasis is an important public health problem with an estimated annual incidence of 1.5 million of new human cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis and 500,000 of visceral leishmaniasis. Treatment of the diseases is limited by toxicity and parasite resistance to the drugs currently in use, validating the need to develop new leishmanicidal compounds. We evaluated the killing by the palladacycle complex DPPE 1.2 of Leishmania (Leishmania) amazonensis, an agent of human cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Amazon region, Brazil. DPPE 1.2 destroyed promastigotes of L. (L.) amazonensis in vitro at nanomolar concentrations, whereas intracellular amastigotes were killed at drug concentrations 10-fold less toxic than those displayed to macrophages. L. (L.) amazonensis-infected BALB/c mice treated by intralesional injection of DPPE 1.2 exhibited a significant decrease of foot lesion sizes and a 97% reduction of parasite burdens when compared to untreated controls. Additional experiments indicated the inhibition of the cathepsin B activity of L. (L.) amazonensis amastigotes by DPPE 1.2. Further studies are needed to explore the potential of DPPE 1.2 as an additional option for the chemotherapy of leishmaniasis
